Google Inc.’s self-driving cars division has reportedly hired its first general counsel. Experts say that the new GC, Kevin Vosen, will have his hands full dealing with issues such as cybersecurity, regulatory compliance and intellectual property law.

Recode first reported Vosen’s hire this past Friday. Google did not respond for comment and has yet to make an official announcement about Vosen’s hire. Industry observers say that the move is a step in Google’s plan to spin off its autonomous cars experiment into a stand-alone company under the Alphabet Inc. corporate umbrella. The self-driving car unit is currently part of X, Gooogle’s semisecret research division.
