The bitcoin of today and the cowrie shell of yesteryear made their debut in a divided U.S. Supreme Court decision Thursday over the meaning of “money.”

Put aside the lofty interpretations of the commerce clause and the appointments clause that marked the day’s biggest rulings. Armed with dictionaries, the justices fought to resolution of a question that had divided the lower courts: Should stock be considered “money”?
