Federal hate crime charges have been filed against the man accused of killing legal assistant Heather Heyer after driving a car into people protesting against a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, last August.

The Justice Department announced Wednesday that a federal grand jury in the Western District of Virginia returned an indictment against James Alex Fields Jr. The indictment includes 30 federal hate crime charges, including one for the death of Heather Heyer.
