The United States has charged 12 Russian intelligence officials for their alleged role in hacking the computers of the Democratic National Committee and the emails of members of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign ahead of the 2016 elections, the Justice Department announced Friday.

According to a Department of Justice press release, the 12 Russian nationals’ goal was to interfere with the presidential election. All 12 are members of the Russian military intelligence service GRU, the DOJ said. The information purloined from the hacks was funneled through the internet under the names DCLeaks and Guccifer 2.0, the government contends.
