Reed Smith partner Eric Dubelier has long represented major corporations in investigations and white-collar defense. When he undertook the pro bono defense of a former U.S. Secret Service agent in a high-profile Foreign Corrupt Practices Act prosecution, colleagues were stunned, he said. “The message I was getting from lawyers in big law firms was, ‘There is no possible way. You are going to get nailed.’ ”

In the end, Dubelier and his firm were rewarded. Following a three-month jury trial, R. Patrick Caldwell, also a decorated former U.S. Marine, was acquitted by a jury in January for his alleged role in a novel foreign bribery case — the largest-ever prosecution of individuals under the FCPA.
