With all the buzz about salary and hiring wars for associates, it’s easy to overlook that firms, particularly those in the Am Law 200, are ferociously competing for partner-level lateral hires as well. There are incredible opportunities for partners wanting to make a move.

But in order to be an attractive lateral partner candidate, you typically need to bring a significant amount of business with you. So what’s “significant” these days? Well, while a $1 million book of business was the sweet spot not too long ago, for some top firms in major markets it’s $3 million, $4 million or even $5 million+ as a starting point.
