Continuing to push action “in response to the threats posed during the 2020 presidential election,” such as attempts to block or change election results, the New York City Bar Association on Wednesday submitted written testimony to the U.S. Senate proposing “essential reforms” to a bipartisan bill that would overhaul the federal Electoral Count Act.

The bill, introduced by Sens. Joe Manchin, D-West Virginia, and Susan Collins, R-Maine, is currently being reviewed by the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration. It would reform the 1887 act in numerous ways. Both Republicans and Democrats have used certain act provisions during four of the last six presidential elections to raise objections to those elections, according to news reports. Manchin has said the new act would fix a law “bad actors” have manipulated. Both Manchin and Collins are aiming to prevent a repeat of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, according to reports.
