The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Harvard and the University of North Carolina’s race-conscious admissions policies are illegal in a split 6-3 ruling condemning affirmative action in higher education.

Writing for the conservative supermajority, Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. said both the Constitution and civil rights law forbid colleges and universities from giving admissions priorities to racial minorities.
