Mass shootings in California left 18 people dead, but lawyers said civil lawsuits on behalf of the victims and their families could be challenging. Here’s my story, which features plaintiffs lawyers who now specialize in mass tort shootings: Anthony Romanucci (Romanucci & Blandin), who sued over last year’s shooting in Highland Park, Illinois; Parker Miller (Beasley Allen), who won a $160 million verdict last month over a 2017 shooting in Atlanta; and Kevin Boyle (Panish Shea) who represented victims of the Las Vegas shooting in 2017.
In a nutshell: Although many facts remain uncertain, lawyers said suing the dance studio and the agricultural worksites in which the shootings occurred would require them to prove there was a reasonable security risk at both places. They also could sue gun manufacturers, particularly after California passed a law limiting the availability of “abnormally dangerous” firearms, but that remains a challenging avenue.
